HOW CAN I.T. PROFESSIONALS INCREASE THEIR POINTS

IT positions have been ever-popular occupations when it comes to General Skilled Migration in Australia. In the past few years the number of IT applications have increased manifolds.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

The Points Requirement for IT professionals is the same, but higher points mean faster processing + better chance at getting a positive visa outcome.

Spots for IT occupations are being filled rapidly which simply means- higher your points, better your chance of getting invited.

The minimum eligible score required for most IT occupations is 60-65. At Path we aim to increase your points to 70-75 to ensure a quick and positive outcome.

HOW TO SCORE MORE POINTS?

Since the points requirement has gone up, the only plausible solution is to obtain MAXIMUM POINTS and get selected on pro-rata basis. Here’s what you can do:

1) Achieving a “proficient/ Superior” English Score (on exams like IELTS/PTE/TOFEL etc)

2) Successful completion of “Professional year” in Australia.

3) State Sponsorship (Visa 190)

4) Regional Sponsorship (Visa 489)

5) Successful completion of a tertiary course in Australia

6) Successful completion of a tertiary course from a Regional institute.

7) Getting Australian Work Experience

8) NAATI Exam.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION:

1) ENGLISH EXAM ( IELTS/PTE/TOFEL ETC)

(Extra points: 10 or 20)

The Australian government gives extra points for better English.

Anything below “Proficient and superior” receives 0 points.

2) PROFESSIONAL YEAR

(Extra points: 5)

Professional year programmes get you ready for professional employment within Australia. They substitute as one year’s work experience in a way and hence fetch you 5 extra points for migration

Please note: Professional year can be done ONLY in Australia.

3) STATE SPONSORSHIP (Visa 190)

(Extra points: 5)

The Australian government gives extra points for migrating to some special states. It acts as an incentive for migrants to chose those states. Merely applying for this visa (190) will get you 5 extra points. The only requirement which differentiates this visa from the 189 Visa

Is that you need to stay in the nominated state for the first 2 years after migrating to Australia.

4)  REGIONAL SPONSORSHIP (Visa 489)

(Extra points: 10)

Visa 489 is a Provisional Visa which ultimately turns into PR after 4 years. Similar to State Sponsorship (Visa 190), the government allots extra points for migrating to a low population growth (or regional) area to qualify for PR through this Provisional Visa.

It gives you 10 extra points and you are required to live and work in a regional area for 4 years. Once you complete the 4 years your visa will directly turn into PR (visa 887).

5) AUSTRALIAN STUDIES

(Extra points: 5)

If you have studied in Australia and successfully completed a full time degree (diploma, advance diploma or any higher education degree), whose duration was AT LEAST 2 years (for the principal course), then you qualify for 5 extra points.

Expert Tip: Please note: the duration of your principal course should be minimum 2 years. Which means if you do 4 diploma courses (6 month each) – it won’t count. The total duration of the PRINCIPLE course should be over 2 years.

6) REGIONAL AUSTRALIAN STUDIES

(Extra Points: 10)

If you have studied in A REGIONAL Australian area and successfully completed a full time degree (diploma, advance diploma or any higher education degree), whose duration was AT LEAST 2 years (for the principal course), then you qualify for 10 extra points.

Expert Tip: Please note that a 2+ year degree gets you 5 points and a degree completed from an institution in a REGIONAL area you qualify for 5 extra points (PLUS 5 points for Australian study) which means a TOTAL of 10 points.

7) AUSTRALIAN WORK EXPERIENCE

(Extra points 5, 10, 15 or 20)

Australian work experience gets you more points than overseas experience. For example, 3 years of overseas experience = 1 year of Australian work experience. Following chart shows the points you get relative to the years of experience you have:

Expert Tip: (1) The experience needs to be in the related field of your education. (2) If you have a “skilled date” mentioned on your Skills Assessment, work experience prior to this “date” won’t be counted.

8) NAATI Exam

(Extra points: 5)

NAATI is a language exam which gets you 5 extra points. The government does this to encourage multiculturalism and they are called “community language points”. To obtain there 5 extra points you must be accredited by NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters)

Expert Tip: You need to attain the “paraprofessional (level 2) or higher” to get the 5 points.

WHAT IS ACS?
The Australian Computer Society (ACS) is the designated skills assessing body for ICT occupations in Australia. They assess if the applicant’s educational qualifications and work experience is closely related to the nominated ICT occupation AND that they match the level of professional ICT in Australia.

ASSESSMENT PROCESS
In simple words: They assess your overseas qualification in comparison with Australian Qualification.

1) During the assessment ACS compares your overseas qualifications using the “Australian national education standards” to determine the AQF (Australian Qualification Framework) comparability.

2) Once they establish the authenticity of your qualification according to the AQF, they assess each one of your course units to ensure it is in line with Australian ICT professional units.
The purpose of the assessment is to determine if your qualification will be considered a “Major” or a “Minor” or insufficient.

3) The last but not the least step is to determine the percentage of ICT units that can be considered “Closely related” to the nominated occupation in line with the ANZSCO CODE INFORMATION

OVERSEAS APPLICANTS AND APPLICANTS WITH A NON- IT  BACKGROUND
Applicants who do not have an Australian ICT Bachelor degree or higher, OR applicants who do not hold an ICT qualification altogether MUST demonstrate significant and relevant Work Experience. The duration of work experience required will depend on your educational qualification.

Bachelor degree or higher with an ICT Major:
CASE 1: Your degree’s ICT major IS closely related to your nominated occupation
In this case the required duration will be either:
2 years relevant work experience with in the past 10 years.
OR
4 years relevant work experience gained during anytime in the past.

CASE 2: Your degree’s ICT major is NOT closely related to your nominated occupation
In this case the required duration will be:
4 years relevant work experience gained during anytime in the past

Bachelor degree or higher with an ICT Minor:
CASE 1: If your degree is assessed as having an ICT minor which IS closely related to your nominated occupation, the duration of work ex required will be either:
5 years relevant work experience completed in the past 10 years
OR
6 years relevant work experience completed anytime during the past.

CASE 2: : If your degree is assessed as having an ICT minor which IS NOT closely  related to your nominated occupation you will require 6 years of relevant work experience completed anytime during the past.

Diploma and Vendor Certification:
CASE 1: If your diploma or vendor certificate is assessed as having an ICT major which IS closely related to your nominated occupation, the required duration will be either:
5 years relevant work experience with in the past 10 years.
OR
6 years relevant work experience gained during anytime in the past.

CASE 2: If your diploma or vendor certificate is assessed as having an ICT major which IS NOT closely related to your nominated occupation, the required duration will be:
6 years relevant work experience gained during anytime in the past.
Non ICT Diploma or Higher
If your qualification is assessed as having “insufficient ICT content”, you will need 6 years of relevant work experience completed anytime during the past AND also a suitable RPL (recognition of prior learning) application.

Work Experience Only – RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning)
If you hold NO tertiary educational qualifications, you will need 8 years of relevant work experience completed anytime during the past AND also a suitable RPL (recognition of prior learning) application.
